this study identified challenges in data collection at the cincinnati children’s hospital medical center. based on interviews and workflow mapping problems such as the unclassifiable nature of the ‘complications’ data and a bottleneck in the current workflow of its capture were identified. a new data collection model was proposed with a focus on decentralizing workloads and a recommendation made to integrate multiple communication channels into one platform. the integration would help with tailoring individual authorizations and tracing communication logs. the prioritized design strategies will move forward the continued effort to improve the ‘complications’ data collection and registry submission workflow.

this project was a team effort and my role was that of a team leader. i set the general direction of the project project, made sure deadlines were met and coordinated with team members on deliverables. i also co-authored the paper – ‘capturing medical complications data for inclusion in national registries: a needs assessment’ resulting from this research. the paper was selected for presentation at American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) conference on may 10th in Scottsdale, AZ.
